St. Patrick's Church was founded Apr. 29, 1822. At first members of the Church were buried in a small ground behind the Church. In May of 1827 there was a request to the Village of Rochester to have the bodies removed from that small cemetery. In June 1827 the Church accepted an offer of 60 lots in the southwest corner of West Cemetery. The bodies were probably moved soon after and the Church would have used West Cemetery for sevaeral years. In 1837 Rochester offered to sell 5 acres to the Church in the new Mt. Hope Cemetery. Instead, in 1838 a 21 acre lot was bought that included most of Pinnacle Hill. Thus, this cemetery is sometimes referred to as Pinnacle Cemetery. The rate of burials at St. Patrick's Cemetery decreased after Holy Sepulchre Cemetery was opened in 1872. Still burials continued even though the Cemetery started to become overgrown. The last burial in the lot was on Dec. 4, 1900, but the name of the person is not known. There were probably a total of 6000 bodies buried in St. Patrick's. Some bodies were moved to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery as early 1872. It wasn't until 1935 that the remaining 4769 bodies were dug up and moved to Holy Sepulchre. Photos in the newspaper show a steam-shovel being used to scrape the top layer of dirt off the graves (see photos on the bottom of this page). Of those graves dug up in 1935, about 35% were identified by lead name plates on the caskets. Family members could claim the body and some were reburied in family plots in Holy Sepulchre. The rest of the bodies were buried in a small lot in Holy Sepulchre which does not have any tombstones on it. I heard that some tombstones still remained in the old lot on Pinnacle Hill so I went to check it out and found many bases of stones and two tombstones. On one stone all that could be read was that the person died age 72. The other stone was a rather large one for Eleanor Greeno. It appears to have been rolled down the hill (see photo). The fate of the other stones is not known. I asked both Holy Sepulchre and the Rochester Catholic Diocese if they knew what happened to the stones and both said they didn't know.
Ulysses McCarthy died March 10, 1873. He was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery as he did not like Holy Sepulchre. He also told his son John that he did not want to ever be moved to Holy Sepulchre. In 1935 when the remaining graves were moved to Holy Sepulchre there was no family left that even knew were Uylsses was buried so he also was moved to the lot in Holy Sepulchre.
These records included in this list come from many sources. The primary source is from the records of Mt. Hope Cemetery, the Rochester public cemetery. It seems that for the years 1838 - 1852 the records were used to record all burials in the City of Rochester. The Mt. Hope records have places for age, cause od death and residence. In the Rochester Union & Advertiser of May 31, 1873 and May 30, 1892 was a list of Civil War Veterans buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Also various newspaper articles through the years had the names of other persons buried in the Cemetery.
My original list was made in Nov. 1987. Then a couple of years later a microfilm surfaced with early burials in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. It included some removals from St. Patrick's Cemetery.
In March 2001 Mary Walters discovered that there are a few deaths for 1832 recorded in the middle of the baptism records. These records were probably recorded by Father John F. McGerry even though he refers to himself in the records. Some of the same people in the Church records are included in a list of Cholera deaths from 1832 with sometimes different ages and spellings of names.
