By law, every municipality in New York State is required to have a Historian. It is a well known fact that the Historians are paid little or no wages. Some have even been known to pay their postal expenses out of their own pocket.
The size of the Historians' collections vary greatly. You will also find that not every Historian is interested in genealogical research. As a matter of fact, the Monroe County Historian will not help anyone except Monroe County residents.
To get the best the best results when writing to one of the Historians, ask one short question and always send a self-addressed stamped enevelope. These are the current Historians in Monroe County:
