Marriages and Deaths from Rochester Newspapers
July 1, 1831 - Dec. 31, 1831

line

Vital records in New York State weren't recorded by the state until 1880. For early vital records you have to either find church records or hope that the event is recorded in the newspaper. For the time period of this page, there were these newspapers published in Rochester:

  1. Rochester Daily Advertiser was published from April 5, 1830 to Dec. 12, 1856. Rochester Public Library has microfilms that include the year 1831. There are some missing issues include all issues from May to Oct. 1831
  2. Rochester Observer (religious; weekly) was published from Jan. 6, 1827 - 1832. Rochester Public Library has a microfilm for the entire run.
  3. Rochester Republican (weekly) was published Aug. 7, 1827 - Aug. 27, 1884. This was the weekly newspaper that was published by the same office as the Rochester Daily Advertiser so it has many of the same records. Rochester Public Library has microfilms that includes the year 1831.
  4. Anti-Masonic Enquirer (weekly) was published from Feb. 12, 1828 to Feb. 1834. The Rochester Public Library has a microfilm that covers the year 1831. Note also that the masthead only says The Enquirer but the name is still Anti-Masonic Enquirer on the other pages..
  5. The Gem (semi-monthly) was published 1829 - 1843. The full name of this paper is The Gem, A Semi-Monthly Literary and Miscellaneous Journal.
  6. The National Republican was published from May or June 1831 to 1834. No existing copies are located in the Rochester area.

Note that some of the films have been scratched and some pages are out of focus so there are some illegible records.

The records on this page are extracted as published in the newspaper. Small monthly calendars are included to help when a newspaper record states that an event happened "last week Thursday."

You may wonder about birth records. Except for a few rare birth notices, birth records were not published until the mid twentieth century.

Two abbreviations that appear frequently in these old records are; inst. and ult. Their meanings are inst. = instant, an old word meaning this month and ult. = ultimo meaning last month.

pointing handEditors with whom we exchange, may do the community a favour by noticing the following.

TO THE PUBLICK

The following minute was adopted by the standing committe of this Church, on the 19 inst.

Whereas, a woman, calling herself widow MARGARET NORTON, with a family of 4 children, came into this village in the month of May last, and by pretensions to property, and professions of an intention to purchase a dwelling for a permanent residence in the place, imposed upon the credulity of many of our inhabitants, and run into debt at several of the stores and shops—And whereas, by zealous pretensions of piety, and by a letter of regular church membership,—(purporting to be from a Presbyterian Church in Greene county, Ohio, and probably a forgery), she offered herself, and was received into the Presbyterian Church in this village—And whereas, she has since proved herself to the conviction of this church and the publick, to be devoid of truth and honesty, and as it is credibly reported that she has a husband now living in Oneida county, and by her secret departure with her family, from this place on the night of the 11th inst. every doubt in regard to her criminal hypocrisy, and daring imposture—And whereas her daughter Mary Ellen and her son John, professing to have become subjects of Grace, recently, in Verona, Oneida county, were, upon examination and a profession of their faith, received into this church, but have manifestly been privy to, and aiders and abetters in much of the wicked conduct of their mother—Therefore

Resolved, That the above named Margaret Norton, and her children, Mary Ellen and John, for the above mentioned criminal conduct, be, and they hereby are, in the name and by the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ, excluded from the communion of the church.

Resolved, That we consider it due to other churches and the publick, to have the above minute published in the papers of this village, the Rochester Observer, and such other papers east and west on the line of the canal as may please to give it an insertion.

By order of the standing Committe of the Presbyterian Church of Brockport.

On the 3d inst., Sarah Jane, youngest daughter of Elvira Dyer. aged 4 years and 6 months. "Suffer little children to come upon to me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven," is the words of our blessed Lord and Saviour, when there were brought into him little children that he should put his hands on them and pray. Why should we mourn; when our Lord calls them to him it is better for them to be with him than to remain in this world of sin and pain.

There is a world of rest,

Where changes never come;

Where the pure of spirit of the blest,

Find their eternal home.

DEATH OF THE HON. J. W. HULBERT

We noticed in our last the death of this individual, and it has scarcely ever fallen to our lot to do a more melancholy service. Col. Hulbert emigrated to this state from Massachusetts about 14 years since, and until the period of his death, occupied a large space in the public eye, and obtained unusual admiration for his private worth, amiable qualities, and acknowledged brilliant talents as a lawyer. — He was, in 1824, elected as a member of the Legislature from this county, the only public office he has consented to fill in this state. In his native state he was repeatedly elected to the state and national legislatures, and while in Congress, he occupied a proud and elevated stand among those who were pre-eminent for talent. His funeral was attended by one of the largest concourses of citizens we have ever witnessed on such occasion.—Cayuga Repub.
